PODCASTER SPOTLIGHT

MARC BERNARDIN

Marc Bernardin writes for TV series including Masters of the Universe: Revelation and Castle Rock, and he hosts the Fatman Beyond and Battlestar Galacticast podcasts.

What was your first fandom?

Well, I’ll tell you, my first fandom was Star Wars. I think it’s because I was eight years old when I saw it in the theater. At that age, you’re beginning to build the parameters of the world as you understand it—and Star Wars is a perfectly good way for a kid to understand the concepts of good and evil. I liked that Luke Skywalker was a kid from the middle of nowhere with nothing. Granted, I wasn’t born on a farm—moisture or otherwise—but I grew up pretty poor. And the idea that greatness could come from anywhere was really powerful. Plus, the Millennium Falcon is super cool.

You write TV series, you host and cohost podcasts. Did you ever think it would be your career?

As for podcasting, I never thought this is something I’d be doing professionally. It ultimately took a friend of mine who had a podcast inviting me on his to get me into it. Over time, though, I think I started to get pretty good at it. That’s the key to new things: you’re going to stink at everything at first. But the more you do it, the better you’ll get at it.

What advice would you give to a kid who wants to start a podcast?

If you want to start your own podcast, you absolutely should. And if you have a friend you can do it with, even better, because conversation with two people is much more interesting that a conversation with yourself. And if there’s a topic you both love—but have different perspectives on—that’s gold. Podcasts are, at their core, about either offering information or sharing love. Teaching or preaching. So don’t start your podcast until you feel comfortable doing one or the other.
